Our panel will consist of experienced in-state and out-of-state venture and angel investors, and we will be joined by the founder and CEO behind a venture backed company that led to one of the most successful New Mexico exits in recent years. The program will focus on the current NM funding landscape as well as what startup founders should think about when seeking to raise capital outside the state.

Mark MarlowMark Marlow
President and Managing Partner, Omphalos Venture Partners, LLC

Mark’s career in finance started in 1991 at Miller, Johnson and Kuehn, a Minneapolis based Investment Banking Firm. In 1995 he joined the newly formed start up company Wam!Net, soon to be a global provider of IT services for the media industry. There he served as Controller and Director of Finance from 1995 to 1997, and Vice President of Finance from 1998 to 2003. During his tenure he helped manage and direct the growth of Wam!Net from a start up company to over $1 billion in government contracts and 450 worldwide employees. He also managed the process of capitalizing Wam!Net’s operations by raising over $700 million dollars in High Yield Bonds, and several Strategic and Private equity placements and the filing for its initial public offering in 2000 with Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch.

In 2003 Mark joined Virtual Radiologic Corporation (NASDAQ: VRAD) as Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer. During his tenure he managed the companies growth from less than $5.0M in revenue in 2003 to over $100.0 million of annual revenue in 2008 during which time he completed several successful private equity placements, two strategic acquisitions and a successful 100 Million dollar initial public offering led by Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch.

Mark Marlow holds a B.S.B. and M.B.A.  from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and has held a N.A.S.D. Series 700 General Securities License. He also served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy and is a graduate of the  Navy Surface Warfare Division Officers School in Newport, RI in 1987.

Terry DunlayTerry Dunlay
Founder, President and CEO, IntelliCyt Corporation

Terry has a solid track record of leadership in the life sciences with over 25 years of experience in growing innovative technology companies and building value for customers, shareholders, and employees. Previously, he was co-founder and Executive Vice President of Cellomics, a leading provider of automated cellular analysis instruments, assays, and informatics software that was acquired by Fisher Scientific (now part of Thermo Fisher). At Cellomics, he invented and commercialized the company’s industry leading high content screening products. Prior to Cellomics, Terry was founder and CEO of Biological Detection, Inc. a bio-imaging software company and earlier was Vice President of Biological Detection Systems, Inc. a bio-imaging systems, software, and reagents company that was acquired by Amersham (now part of GE Healthcare). Former affiliations include Cytyc Corporation, Lockheed Martin, and PPG Industries. Terry has a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering and holds numerous patents in the area of cell-based screening instrumentation and informatics.

Brian BirkBrian Birk
Managing Partner, Sun Mountain Capital 

Brian Birk has over 20 years experience as an operating executive and investor. Mr. Birk co-founded Sun Mountain Capital, a boutique private equity firm focused on the Southwest and Rocky Mountain regions, in 2006. Since that time Sun Mountain has grown to be one of the largest PE firms in the region, and currently manages direct investment funds and fund of funds vehicles. Prior to forming Sun Mountain Capital, Mr. Birk was a Vice President and Director of Private Equity at Fort Washington Capital Partners where he helped the firm establish and manage a number of private equity direct investment funds, secondary investment funds, and fund of funds programs.

Mr. Birk was a founder or senior executive at several high profile start-ups, including MetaWeb (acquired by Google), Applied Minds and BiosGroup. In addition, Mr. Birk has held a senior manager position at the Boston Consulting Group and finance manager positions at General Electric and GE Capital. Mr. Birk has an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and a BS in economics from Carleton College.

Mr. Birk is a Board Member of Sun Mountain Capital portfolio companies Aspen Avionics, American Clay, Exagen Diagnostics, Growstone, Lumidigm Seamless Medical Systems, Agilvax, and Puente Partners. He is very active in investing throughout the region, including serving as the Chairman of the Board for the Rocky Mountain Venture Capital Association.

Amanda GianniniAmanda Giannini (moderator)
CFO, Verge Fund

Ms. Giannini has been involved with the Verge Fund since 2007. Giannini, a New Mexico native, has worked within the technology startup community for the last decade in a number of finance roles.  She has worked as Director of Finance, and now Chief Financial Officer, for Verge Fund for 9 years managing the accounting, finance and investor relations functions for the company. Giannini has been involved with the formation and management of five venture capital funds, and has served as interim Controller for two of the Verge portfolio companies, assisting in taking one through acquisition. Her extensive Fund management experience is a unique skill here in New Mexico. She served as founding CFO of ABQid, Inc. until February of 2016, managing the formation of their private equity fund, as well as formation and approval of the 501(c)3 organization.

Giannini’s many years of finance and accounting experience allows her to operate at a Director/CFO level while also maintaining and managing day-to-day finances for both private equity firms as well as venture back startup companies. She has been deeply involved with the New Mexico Tech Council, an organization which encourages technological innovation, entrepreneurship and community within New Mexico. She was chosen as one of New Mexico Business First’s 40 under Forty upcoming business leaders. She completed the Leadership New Mexico’s Connect New Mexico program. She has been an invited guest lecturer on venture capital and private equity for Entrepreneurial Studies classes at both Webster University and the University of New Mexico. Giannini is passionate about the startup community in New Mexico and is excited to be a part of moving the innovation forward as momentum within the community continues grow.
