Join us at Prairie Star for the March 10th Coronado Ventures Forum event focused on the newly formed New Mexico Catalyst Fund! This fund of funds is focused on New Mexico startups and will address the funding needs of fledgling companies by backing funds that support startup companies and leverage other investment funding. Panelists will include a representative of Sun Mountain Capital and other key organizers of the fund who will share their perspective on the potential impact of the fund to the New Mexico startup ecosystem.
The panel will also discuss the nuts and bolts of this new exciting addition to our funding landscape.

Brian Birk (moderator)
Managing Partner, Sun Mountain Capital
Brian Birk has over 20 years experience as an operating executive and investor. Mr. Birk co-founded Sun Mountain Capital, a boutique private equity firm focused on the Southwest and Rocky Mountain regions, in 2006. Since that time Sun Mountain has grown to be one of the largest PE firms in the region, and currently manages direct investment funds and fund of funds vehicles. Prior to forming Sun Mountain Capital, Mr. Birk was a Vice President and Director of Private Equity at Fort Washington Capital Partners where he helped the firm establish and manage a number of private equity direct investment funds, secondary investment funds, and fund of funds programs.
Mr. Birk was a founder or senior executive at several high profile start-ups, including MetaWeb (acquired by Google), Applied Minds and BiosGroup. In addition, Mr. Birk has held a senior manager position at the Boston Consulting Group and finance manager positions at General Electric and GE Capital. Mr. Birk has an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and a BS in economics from Carleton College.
Mr. Birk is a Board Member of Sun Mountain Capital portfolio companies Aspen Avionics, American Clay, Exagen Diagnostics, Growstone, Lumidigm Seamless Medical Systems, Agilvax, and Puente Partners. He is very active in investing throughout the region, including serving as the Chairman of the Board for the Rocky Mountain Venture Capital Association
Patricia M. Knighten
Manager of the Office of Science and Technology, NMEDD
In July 2014, Ms. Knighten joined New Mexico Economic Development Department to reinstate the Office of Science and Technology, the state’s focal point for leveraging the State’s technological strength, determining its commercial advantage, and developing a vibrant technology based industry base. She is responsible for leading and executing initiatives to enable the growth, start-up and relocation of technology-based industries leading to job creation in the state. She brings a unique combination of strategy, management and business development expertise with engineering and emerging technology know-how to establish initiatives, manage programs, and drive growth and profit for premier organizations.
Accomplished at implementing growth strategies and winning bids for extremely complex, technical projects in highly regulated aerospace, energy, security and defense environments. Held management and technical positions at Sandia National Laboratories, Rolls Royce Inc., McDonnell Douglas, and Rockwell International, small businesses and high tech startups.
She holds a Masters Certificate in Project Management, Villanova University; Bachelor of Science in Logistics Management, Weber State University; Engineering study and internships at Wright Patterson AFB, University of Dayton, US Dept. of Agriculture, and New Mexico State University.

John McDermott is managing principal of McDermott Advisory Services and engages as both an advisor and investor in information technology start-ups and growth phase companies. His current investment and advisory work is focused in Enterprise Software, Cyber Security and information technology intensive Business Process Services. John also serves on the Board of ABQid, New Mexico’s only curriculum driven, seed-funded business accelerator.
In addition to his work in the private sector, John currently chairs the New Mexico Finance Authority, the state’s vehicle for delivering low cost financing to New Mexico communities. With assets of more than $2B and AAA credit rating, the NMFA is viewed as a key resource in state economic development.
Before retuning to New Mexico in 2012, John was Xerox Corporation’s Chief Strategy Officer and head of Corporate Development. John led corporate strategy, acquisitions and divestitures during this transformational period at Xerox. John’s operational responsibilities also included leadership of Xerox’s information technology organization.
Prior to joining Xerox, John spent nearly 15 years at Marakon Associates, an international management-consulting firm, where he was a partner and led the technology industry practice. He provided Fortune 500 clients in North America, Europe and Asia with support on business strategy, operations improvement and organizational design, primarily in the technology and telecommunications industries.
