According to Cybercast news, the FBI predicts Cyber-attacks on the nation’s private sector and government networks are expected to “grow exponentially” and will continue to pose a serious threat to privacy, security and the U.S. economy for the foreseeable future. Why should you care about a Cyber Attack? Mark Fidel of  CAaNES will present a case study that goes over the anatomy of a cyber-attack. Mark will then lead a panel featuring companies and experts in the cyber security field in New Mexico to discuss the trends of the industry and how this affects startup companies.

Mark FidelMark Fidel
President, CAaNES

Mark Fidel, one of CAaNES’ owners, currently serves as its President and is an attorney licensed to practice in New Mexico. Mark is a former litigator who founded Applied Records Management in 2004. ARM is a records management and litigation support consulting firm. He worked for the Intel Corporation as a capital analyst in a small manufacturing division, where he worked closely with the engineering staff to develop solutions to manufacturing bottlenecks, and as a senior financial analyst specializing in fixed asset and expense accounting with responsibilities to Intel’s worldwide accounting operations.

Mark was admitted to the New Mexico Bar in 2002 and became an associate at one of New Mexico’s largest law firms, Modrall Sperling, where he specialized in commercial litigation. Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts and Economics degree with a major in Finance from New Mexico State University. He earned an Executive MBA from the University of New Mexico and his law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.

Srinivas MukkamalaSrinivas Mukkamala, Ph.D.
CTO, CAaNES

Dr. Mukkamala is the chief security strategist and chief technology officer of CAaNES and is also a Senior Research Scientist with ICASA (Institute for Complex Additive Systems Analysis). ICASA is a statutory research division of New Mexico Tech performing work on information technology, information assurance, and analysis and protection of critical infrastructures (as complex interdependent systems). Dr. Mukkamala has over 10 years of experience in Information Security and is one of the lead researchers for CACTUS (Computational Analysis of Cyber Terrorism against the US). He was a project lead for over 100 Security Posture and Vulnerability Assessments, Incident Response, and Digital Forensics projects in the last 3 years.

Dr. Mukkamala received his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Computer Science and Engineering from University of Madras, and worked as an intern at Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) before obtaining his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from New Mexico Tech.

Michael SmithMichael Smith
Associate Director and Program Manager, ICASA

Mr. Smith holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and is in the process of completing his Program Management Professionals (PMP) certification. Mr. Smith has been the ICASA Program Manager and Technical Task Lead on several projects at ICASA for over six years. Mr. Smith has experience in the modeling and simulation of large-scale critical infrastructures systems, to include electric power (EP) systems, performing programming and scientific analysis in the MatLab environment, mathematical and scientific modeling, including paradigms such as hybrid-dynamical systems modeling.
